Abstrak

Obat Herbal Untuk Penanganan Kemoterapi Dan Efek Samping

Kanker merupakan salah satu penyebab kematian utama di seluruh dunia dimana pada tahun 2012, sekitar 8,2 juta kematian disebabkan oleh kanker. Penyakit kanker adalah penyakit yang timbul akibat pertumbuhan tidak normal sel jaringan tubuh yang berubah menjadi sel kanker. Sejauh ini, penanganan untuk penyakit kanker dapat dilakukan dengan kemoterapi, radioterapi, dan operasi. Beberapa obat kemoterapi yang paling sering digunakan adalah antimetabolit (contoh: metotreksat), senyawa interaktif DNA (contoh: cisplatin), senyawa antitubulin (contoh: taksan), hormon dan senyawa penarget molekular. Namun obat kemoterapi tidak lepas dari efek samping yang dapat menurunkan kualitas hidup penderita kanker. Oleh karena itu, review ini akan membahas tentang obat-obat herbal yang dapat digunakan sebagai antikanker serta menangani efek samping dari kemoterapi. Metode dalam review ini adalah penelusuran pustaka dengan menggunakan Pubmed dan Google Scholar. Pencarian dilakukan dengan menggunakan kata kunci “chemotherapy”, “herbal chemotherapy”, “efek samping kemoterapi”, “obat tradisional kemoterapi”. Hasil review menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan obat herbal atau bahan alami dalam penanganan kemoterapi memberikan efek kemoterapi dengan berbagai mekanisme seperti menekan proliferasi sel, induksi apoptosis, memperlambat metastasis, tanpa menurunkan kualitas hidup penderita kanker. Beberapa obat herbal juga dapat digunakan untuk mengatasi efek samping yang muncul akibat kemoterapi seperti anoreksia, diare, neuropati, dan lain-lain.

Cancer is one of the leading cause of death worldwide where in 2012, about 8.2 million deaths were caused by cancer. Cancer is a disease caused by abnormal growth of body tissue cells that turn into cancer cells. So far, treatment of cancer can be done with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Some of the most commonly used chemotherapy drugs are antimetabolites (eg, methotrexate), DNA-interactive agents (eg, cisplatin), antitubulin agents (eg, taxane), hormones and molecular targeting agents. However, chemotherapy drugs can’t be separated from its side effects that can reduce the quality of life of cancer patients. Therefore, this review will discuss herbal medicines that can be used as an anticancer agents as well as a treatment for side effects of chemotherapy. The methods in this review are databased searching based on Pubmed and Google Scholar with the keyword “chemotherapy”, “herbal chemotherapy”, “chemotherapy side effects”, “traditional chemotherapy drugs”. The result of the review shows that the use of herbal medicines or natural ingredients provides chemotherapy effects with a various mechanism such as cell proliferation suppression, apoptosis induction, retard metastasis without decreasing the quality of life of cancer patients. Some herbal remedies can also be used to overcome the side effects of chemotherapy such as anorexia, diarrhea, neuropathy, and others.
