Using molecular-dynamics simulation coupled to a homogeneous model for the electron gas,we study the response of an Al thin film on short-pulse laser irradiation. Laser pulses are considered to have a double-peak structure consisting of two Gaussian pulses; the time delay between the two pulses is varied. The temporal dependence of the energy transfer from the electronic system to the lattice is considered in detail. The effect on the temperature and pressure inside the material, as well as on melting, void nucleation and spallation (ablation) are studied.
