Traditionally, the Dayak people who reside in three villages: Desa Dempar, Jontai, and Sembuan, Kutai Barat, East Kalimantan had successfully managed the forest by sustainable system, particularly for practising swidden cultivation, planting rattans, planting fruit trees, and collecting non-timber forest products. Currently, however, the Dayak traditional forest management system has dramatically changed because their forest hes been exploited by the HPH/HPHH. In this article, the authors address some fundamental issues concerning changes of local forest management undertaken by Dayak people who live in those three villages caused by impact of the Forest Concession (HPH)/the Forest Product Concession (HPHH or HPH small scale) activities. The authors argue that the successful local community forest management in those three villages has been significantly disturbed by the HPH/HPHH. Consequently, the sustainability of forest ecosystem for the future has tended to hardly be maintained by the Dayak community.
