We have studied one-dimensional nonlinear (1D) photonic crystal for all-optical switching devices in telecommunication wavelength. We have studied three different structures: nonlinear Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR), photonic crystal with defect layer and nonlinear photonic crystals which has similar linear refractive index but has different sign of nonlinear refractive index. We have used two different method to study the nonlinear photonic crystal 1D i.e. transfer matrix method and nonlinear coupled mode equation. The first method was used to determine photonic bandgap and the later was used to study the potensial of the structures for all-optical switching application. By use of appropriate combination of refractive indices and layer thickness, we have found that the nonlinear DBR and photonic crystal with defect layer are appropriate structures for all-optical switching in telecommunication wavelength (1.55 mm). Meanwhile, the third structure can be used both for switching and optical limiter at the wavelength of 1.0 mm.
