Thompson (2001) states that to start a romantic relationship with the opposite sex, a person must be satisfied with her physical appearance (body) otherwise it will be difficult for the individual to begin a relationship with the opposite sex. The aim of this study is to determine whether there is a relationship between a person’s body image with the capacity for intimacy with the opposite sex. The study was conducted on 84 female students at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Padjadjaran. The study used non-experimental research design by using a correlational research method. Measuring instruments used in this study were the body image questionnaire adopted from Annisa Mutiara Thesis (2013) and the capacity for intimacy with the opposite sex questionnaire derived from the theory of capacity for intimacy by Orlofsky (1993). Based on calculations of spearman correlation test with 95% confidence level (รก = 0.05), obtained r of 0,190 and p-value of 0,084. These results indicate that there was no significant relationship between body image and capacity for intimacy with the opposite sex in female student at Faculty of Psychology, University of Padjadjaran. However, the result showed that the dimension of body image evaluation significantly related to the dimensions of closeness and commitment in the capacity for intimacy with the opposite sex.
