Knowledge Management, Small and Medium Enterprises
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) has contributed significantly to the development of Indonesian economy. Nevertheless, Indonesian SMEs are not as competitive as those in developed countries, even those in other ASEAN countries. In the United States, SMEs have been the driving force of its economic development. One of the proof is that several SMEs in the U.S. have been included on the list of 500 Top Companies released by Fortune Magazine. The main reason why SMEs in the United States have been so successful in supporting economic development in that country is that SMEs have been developed by utilizing knowledge based management. Based on the same paradigm of the success story of SMEs in the United States, SMEs in Indonesia will also become the driving force of the process of economic development if the development of SMEs in Indonesia is conducted with the implementation of knowledge based management. Knowledge based management applied to many SMEs, eventually will induce the creation of a Knowledge Based Economy. This paper explains descriptively and analytically an Indonesian SMEs development model with the application of knowledge based management. It is believed that if the strategy is implemented on a large scale basis, Indonesian SMEs will become more competitive, will have higher survivability ,and will be more sustainable. The overall result will be an economy that is more dynamic, flexible, and functioning better. The situation is a necessary condition for economic growth and economic development.
