Meet the needs of communication is an important aspect which is expected by patients with mechanical ventilation from nurses in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to prevent stress, and indirectly beneficial to minimize the time of patient care in ICU. Therefore nurses need to know about communication requirements expected by patients with mechanical ventilation.

This study aims to identify the communication needs of patients with mechanical ventilation in the three components including communication channels, messages, as well as the communicator. Research design applied in this study was a descriptive exploratory using a questionnaire consisting of closed questions and open questions. Sampling was purposive sampling technique in which patients who had been discharged from General Hospital Intensive Care Unit (GICU) Dr. Hasan Sadikin Bandung and once using mechanical ventilation therapy, with total of 32 respondents, as well as analysis of the data using frequency distributions and percentages.

The results indicated that the most dominant component of the communication channel is communication through images (96.9%), from the communication message is the need of information about pain and discomfort (100%), and from the communicator component is hoping nurses to have a quick response in fulfiling the needs of the patients (96.9%). While from the open-ended questions was obtained additional information which the patients requires phone to families can provide support through one way communication (6,25%) and more time for families to visit them (6,25%).

Nurses are expected to provide and give information that are needed by the patient, increase the use of effective communication channels as well as provide sufficient time for families to visit the patients, and using telephone to facilitate communication to the patient’s family outside the visiting hours set by the room.
