COPING STRATEGIES OF PATIENTS NEWLY DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER

Background : Patients who newly diagnosed with cancer often experienced stress. These conditions stimulate the patient perform an action to overcome the stress that is often referred to as a coping strategy. The purpose of this study was to identify coping strategies undertaken by patients who already diagnosed with cancer

Methods: This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. A total of 12 subjects consisted of 6 ovarian cancer patients and 6 breast cancer patients involved in this study. The data retrieval techniques focused group discussion (FGD), then the data that has been collected analyzed using systematic analysis.

Findings: The results of this study indicate that there was some coping strategies applied by the patients at the time of initial diagnosis including reject to closer to Allah, seek the opinion of other health professionals (second opinion), discuss the situation experienced with spouse / families, search the various alternatives treatment, discuss with other cancer patients who had already been diagnosed, asking for suggestion from a doctor about what to do

Conclusion: This study produced seven coping strategies undertaken by patients diagnosed with cancer. Based on the results of this study are expected nurses to facilitate and support positive coping strategies and help change negative coping strategies, so that further research related to how to build positive coping in cancer patients needs to be done
