On this planet earth, to-date, sustainability is the goal in every human aspect. According to Jesse Dillard, Veronica Dujon, and Mary King in their article “Understanding the Social Dimension of Sustainability (2009), sustainability is often thought of as composed of three overlapping, mutually dependent goals: a) to live in a way that is environmentally sustainable, or viable over the very long-term, b) to live in a way that is economically sustainable, maintaining living standards over the long-term, and c) to live in a way that is socially sustainable, now and in the future. When we talk about ‘socially sustainable’ as point c above mentioned, a more thought-out and satisfactory definition of social sustainability is provided by Harris and Goodwin: “A socially sustainable system must achieve fairness in distribution and opportunity, adequate provision of social services, including health and education, gender equity, and political accountability and participation. Many countries are planning and engaged in building green cities and “eco-cities” as starting points for the building of sustainable development. Yet, it is important to understand cities’ sustainability as a broader concept which integrates social development, economic development, environmental management and urban governance, which refers to the management and investment decisions taken by municipal authorities in coordination with national authorities and institutions.
