Unsur-unsur Gotik Dalam Novel Penunggu Jenazah Karya Abdullah Harahap (Gothic Elements in the Novel Penunggu Jenazah by Abdullah Harahap)

Tulisan ini mengkaji unsur-unsur gotik yang terdapat dalam novel Penunggu Jenazah karya Abdullah Harahap. Kajian ini dilandasi oleh teori unsur gotik dari Brigid Cherry dan teori monstrous feminine dari Barbara Creed. Novel yang dikaji menunjukkan ada tiga unsur gotik yang dominan, yaitu unsur supernatural, bentuk-bentuk transgresi dan monstrous feminine. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa unsur-unsur gotik dalam novel Penunggu Jenazah saling tumpang tindih karena satu unsur gotik seperti supernatural digunakan untuk beberapa kepentingan berbeda. Unsur supernatural digunakan sebagai bentuk transgresi terhadap hukum alam, bentuk-bentuk transgresi dicampurkan dengan unsur supernatural dan monst rous feminine. Monstrosit as yang paling sering muncul adalah monst rous f emi nine yang menggambarkan perempuan sebagai sosok yang menakutkan dan memiliki kekuatan supernatural.

This paper examines the gothic elements in Abdullah Harahap’s Penunggu Jenazah. This study applies the theory of gothic elements by Brigid Cherry and the theory of monstrous feminine by Barbara Creed. In the novel it is found that there are three main elements of gothic. They are supernatural elements, forms of transgression and monstrous feminine. The result indicates that gothic elements in the novel are overlapping since one of the gothic elements, supernatural, is used for different purposes. The supernatural element transgresses the law of nature, the forms of transgression mixed up with the supernatural elements and monstrous feminine. The most common form of monstrosity is the monstrous feminine, potraying woman as a scaring figure and having the supernatural power.
