Anthropometric, Cardiorespiratory Fitness, elderly, Handgrip strength, physical activity
Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) measurement through maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) using exercise testing cannot be easily performed in elderly and primary healthcare setting. The purpose of this study is to find out association of CRF without exercise testing with variables such as anthropometric measurements, physical activity level and handgrip strength specifically that easily performed in Indonesian elderly population. Cross-sectional study with 60 healthy elderly subjects (30 female and 30 male), aged 60-74 years old in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan and Bandung, West Java. Anthropometric measurements [body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference], six minute walking test (6MWT), physical activity level [Physical Activity Scale for Elderly (PASE)] and handgrip strength measurement, has been applied to all participants. Correlation and multiple linear regression models were measured and the results showed various correlations between cardiorespiratory fitness in female and male elderly with BMI (r=0.417, r= 0.034), waist circumference (r= 0.156, r =-0.087), physical activity (r= 0.677, r= 0.663) and handgrip strength (r=0.852, r= 0.814). Cardiorespiratory fitness has very strong association with handgrip strength, strong association with physical activity and weak association to BMI and very weak to waist circumference in Indonesian elderly. This result is important to obtain database for construct an equation to predict CRF for Indonesian elderly from those variables.
