Purpose: To report the effectiveness and the complication of silicone oil intraocular tamponade in vitreoretina surgery in Cicendo Eye Hospital. Method: A retrospective review of patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy and used silicon oil as an intraocular tamponade from October 2002 to September 2003. We examined the clinical outcome and the complication in 6 months follow-up. Result: of 219 eyes who underwent vitreoretinal surgery, 77 eyes (35. 1 6 Ado) were merely treated with vitrectomy, 55 eyes (2%. 1 1 %) treatedwithvitrectomy and silicone oil as an intraoculartamponade, 39 eyes ( I 7.8 1 %) treated with vitrectomy with SF6 gas, 24 eyes (10 96 %) eyes treated with pneumatic retinopexy and 24 eyes ( 10.96 Bin) treated with other methods. Of 55 eyes who underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil as an intraocular tamponade, we were able to analyze 35 and find that: intraocular pressure increased in 8 eyes (22.X5 %) at first and second postoperative day, only one eye could not be managed with topical and systemic aqueous suppressants. Cataract occurred in 6 eyes ( 17.14 ‘~).The retina were attached in 33 eyes (94.28 to). Conclusion: The application of silicone oil as an intraocular tamponade in vitreoretinal surgery could be considered to provide extended intraocular tamponade of complex retinal detachment and thereby prevent or limit the development of recurrent retinal detachment.
