Many drugs have been developed to improve hepatocellular function in chronic hepatitis. These drugs include schizandrae, silymarin, curcuma, liquiritiae, and pyridoxine (vitamin B6).

This study is conducted to assess comparison between single schizandrae and schizandrae in combination with silymarin, curcuma, liquiritiae, and vitamin B6 in chonic hepatitis patients (Curliv plus).

In a prospectively randomized, clinical trial, double blind parallel design and repeated measures on 44 patients with chronic hepatitis. The subjects divided into 2 equal numbered groups. Each group received single schizandrae 3 times daily or combination schizandrae 3 times daily for a period of 28 days. Every patients before treatment underwent examination hemoglobin, leucocyt, platelet, prothrombin time (PT) , international normalized ratio (INR), transaminase (SGOT and SGPT), total protein, albumin, HBsAg, anti HCV,total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, abdominal ultrasound. Repeated examination serum GOT and GPT, PT , INR, total protein, albumin, total bilirubin, direct bilirubin after treatment. Statistical analysis was done based on t-test.

After single schizandrae administration there was no statistically significant reduction of mean SGOT 68.77 to 61.32 U/L (p > 0.05), SGPT from 78.47 to 72.11 U/L (p > 0.05), PT from 14.24 to 13.95 seconds (p > 0.05), total bilirubin from 1.17 to 1.07 mg/dl (p > 0.05).

After combination schizandrae administration there was a statistically significant reduction of mean SGPT from 95.94 to 83.94 U/L (p < 0.05), and total bilirubin from 1.95 to 1.27 mg/dl (p < 0.05). No statistically significant of mean SGOT 85.00 to 80.50 U/L (p > 0.05), PT from 14.18 to 14.17 seconds (p > 0.05).

These results show that in chronic hepatitis patients combination schizandrae may improve SGPT and total bilirubin better than single shizandrae.
